Girl Scout Blood Drive
Sept. 8th, 2010 l Emporia

Girl Scout Cadette Abby Maycock, 13, is helping organize an American Red Cross Blood Drive in Emporia Wednesday, September 8th. Maycock was a member of Emporia Middle School Troop # 37302. She is planning the details of this blood drive and is recruiting donors to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award - the highest honor a girl from ages 11 to 14 may receive!

Help make this a drive a success by donating at Maycock's blood drive from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept 8th at the Amend Girl Scout Center, 1200 Burlingame Road in Emporia. For this drive, appointments are necessary. To make an appointment visit redcrossblood.org or call 620-794-2026.

All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply, but  0 negative donors are especially needed right now. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of ID are required at check-in. Donors must be in general good health, weight at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old ( 16 in Kansas with complete Parental Consent form). New height and weight restrictions apply to donors younger than 19.

All Veterans Tribute Golf Tournament
September 11th , 2010 l Emporia

Sign up now for the All Veterans Golf Tournament Saturday, September 11th.

The Golf Tournament will  be held at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

An opening ceremony with a flag raising, pledge of allegiance, and prayer will kick things off at 8:30 a.m.

Morning snacks and coffee will be available in the club house, and lunch prepared and served by Bruff's.

Cash payouts for 3 flights, Hole Prizes, & A Grand Prize Drawing.

16th Annual Anique Engine and Tractor Show

Its the 16th Annual Antique Engine and Tractor Show September 10th thru the 12th at Forest Park in Ottawa. Featuring Ford Tractors and Cushman Engines.

A few of the events taking place:

Shoe Throw & Skillet Toss- for the ladies that attend the show. It consist of throwing a shoe and tossing a skillet. The longest distance wins.

Kiddie Tractor Pull- Starts at 10:00am Saturday with registration at 9:00am. Age limit of 4 to 12 years of age.

Parade of Power- This event consists of all tractors lining up to parade around the park. Steel Wheel tractors are excluded unless the are equipped with a flat steel band.

24th Annual Ol'Marais River Run Car Show
Sept. 17th - 19th, 2010 l Ottawa, KS

Classic Car Enthusist don't miss out on the 24th Annual Ol'Marais River Run Car Show September 17th, 18th, and 19th in Ottawa.

The Over the Road Gang offers the greatest small -town car show in Northeast Kansas.  The car show is limited to vehicles entries dated 1972 and below, as well as period correct restorations or re-creations.

The Back To the 60's Cruise Night will take place on Saturday September 18th in the early evening. The vehicles will line up starting from Forest Park and will head down Main Street towards the Historic Downtown Ottawa area.

8th Annual Golf Benefit
Sept. 17th - 18th, 2010 l Garnett

Anderson County Hospital Foundation will host its 8th Annual Golf Benefit, " Monopoly Golf". This four-person scramble will be held on Friday, Sept. 17th and Saturday, Sept. 18th at the Garnett Country Club at the North Lake Park. Golfers may choose one day. Pre-Registration is required and can be done so by calling 785-204-8060. 

The event include contests such as closest to the pin, longest putt, and men's and women's longest drive. All proceeds support Anderson County Hospital Foundation. Donation will also be accepted.

Registration is at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start time of 8:30 a.m.

Cost is $85 per golfer or $340 per team of four golfers and includes green fees, golf cart, breakfast, boxed lunch, and a gift.

Family Reading Festival

Iola Public Library is proud to announce the launch of a community involvement programe called "Family Reading Festival". The Festival will be held on Saturday, September 18th, 2010 on the campus of Allen County Community College.

Biker Breakfast
Sept 19th l Yates Center

Every 3rd Sunday of the Month is a Biker Breakfast put on by the American Legion Post 13 in Yates Center. This is the last Biker Breakfast for the season.

Scrambled Eggs, Hash Browns, Biscuits and Gravy, Link Sausage, Coffe and Orange juice will be served at the Northwest side of the beautiful historical Yates Center Square from 7am to 11am.  Just $6.00 donation.

 

2nd Annual Dog House Build
Sept. 19th, 2010 l Emporia, KS

The Humane Society of the Flint Hills will hold their 2nd annual dog house build on September 19thm at 1pm at the Anderson Building located on the Lyon County Fair Grounds.

Boy Scout Troop 165 will be assisting us with our build. Each boy scout will build their own dog house for their woodworking merit badge and donate it to the Humane Society. In addition, they will assist them the day of the build with an additional five houses. All houses will be given away to senior citizens and low income families that do not have appropriate shelter for their dogs.

The Garnett Church of the Nazarene is hosting The Run For Water 5K Run/Walk on September 25th in Garnett. This is a project to provide clean water and mosquito nets for orphans of Kenya.

Beings at 8:00am behind the stadium at The North Lake Park in Garnett at the rail trail and will continue around the North Lake, around the pool, then backt to the Start/Finish Line.

Entry Fee: $25.00 for 13 yrs and up. /  $15.00 for 12 yrs and younger.

NWTF Inaugural Upland Gamebird Chapter Banquet
October 30th, 2010 l Piqua

The National Wild Turkey Federation is proud to announce the formation of its first ever upland gamebird chapter. The Kansas First Upland Pioneers Chapter was created in Iola, on August 18th by more than two dozen conservation-minded individuals who decided the best way to improve quail populations and upland habitat was to form the first NWTF chapter focused on upland gamebirds.

The Chapter will host its first banquet in Piqua, on Saturday October 30th.

33rd Annual Emporia Christmas Parade
Nov. 30th, 2010 l Emporia

Kick off the holidays with the 33rd Annual community Christmas Parade in downtown Emporia on Tuesday, November 30th. If inclement weather was to occur the parade will then be held on Thursday, December 2nd.

This year's theme is "Emporia Lights The Way".

Area buisnesses, organizations, and individuals are invited to participate!

The evening will begin with a dedication and lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in front of the CABLE ONE office at 714 Commerical.Festivities include:a Christmas Message, Musical Performances, and a lighting ceremony performed by Cify Of Emporia Mayor Jeff Longbine. The Parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. at 4th Ave and proceed up Commercial Street to 12th Ave.

 

Entry Into The Parade:

To enter the parade please pick up entry forms at the Chamber office located at 719 Commerical St. in the Trusler Business Center or can be printed from the Chamber and Visitor's Bureau Website, www.emporiakschamber.org. From the main page, select "Applications & Entry Forms", then choose Christmas Parade Entery Form. The complete form can be faxed to the Chamber office at 342-3223, mailed, or hand delivered. Deadline for entries is Friday, November 5th.
